The Academy Fellowship is designed for newly-elected or appointed Mayors/Governors in the region. Fellows will be selected based on established criteria, including commitment to sustainable urban development priorities, opportunities to localize the Sustainable Development Goals and establish local climate actions. Fellowships will consider regional balance and gender. Applications from women mayors are strongly encouraged.

The selection committee will be composed of representatives of ESCAP, UN-Habitat and UCLG-ASPAC, the United Nations University-Institute for Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). Mentors could be identified to support in the selection process, as well as in the preparatory process of those mayors selected to be part of the Academy.

In order for a city Mayor to be eligible, the candidate must:

  • Be a newly-elected or appointed Mayor/Governor, typically in the first third of the term although special circumstances may apply.

  • Commit to attending bi-weekly online sessions from April to October 2024 (subject to change). The Fellowship will culminate in a physical Expert Group Meeting (EGM) and Graduation at the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12) in Cairo, Egypt, 4 to 8 November 2024. (Note: This may include financial support for travel to Cairo, however in-kind contributions and co-funding are welcome).
