ELIGIBILITY FOR
THE FELLOWSHIP
The Academy Fellowship is designed for newly-elected or appointed mayors/governors in the region. Fellows will be selected based on established criteria, including commitment to sustainable urban development priorities, opportunities to localize the Sustainable Development Goals and establish local climate actions. Fellowships will consider regional balance and gender. Applications from women mayors are strongly encouraged.
The selection committee will be composed of representatives of UN ESCAP, UN-Habitat and UCLG-ASPAC, the United Nations University-Institute for Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). Mentors could be identified to support in the selection process, as well as in the preparatory process of those mayors selected to be part of the Academy.
In order for a city Mayor to be eligible, the candidate must:

Be a newly-elected or appointed mayor/governor, typically in the first third of the term

Must commit to attending the following:

Bi-weekly virtual academy sessions, February 2023 to September 2023.

Physical sessions that will coincide with the 8th Asia-Pacific Urban Forum (APUF-8) in Suwon, Republic of Korea, October 2023. This may include financial support for the city mayors/governors (though in-kind contributions are expected, and co-funding is welcome).

Fluency in English will be considered in the selection criteria.

Be located in a member or associate member State of UN ESCAP.
